Lisa McFadden Millinery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Inspired by Josephine Baker

Such an honor to show for the third time with the Milliners Guild at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Mezzanine Gallery. This time celebrating the winners of the Mildred Blount Competition in collaboration with the Met Store's installation 'Film to Fashion' now through 10/30/24.

.
The title, Film to Fashion, is indicative of the wearable interpretations of each milliner's chosen film from the 1930's-50's and serves as an homage to the Hollywood career of the Black milliner who created hats for iconic films: Gone With the Wind, GiGi, Easter Parade and more. My inspiration is the musical, "Zou Zou" 1934 starring Josephine Baker.
.
A nod to the toast of Paris! Josephine Baker developed a brilliantine hair product called "Bakerfix," the perfect complement to the fashionable cloche hats of the era and the liberated women who wore them. Here, the hat style is merged with the international star's undeniable signature coiffure in a full sequined, patterned and wired, hand crafted Trompe l'oeil type of headpiece inspired by a scene in which Josephine sings C'est Lui.
